For those of us who work closely with our local communities, the devastation caused by the earthquake and tsunami that struck that day is almost beyond comprehension.  We are profoundly saddened by the knowledge that many thousands of lives were lost as an entire city perished.
For our employees who work in the affected areas, the devastation was personal, and it is felt in ways far beyond the statistics and stories reported by the media.  For them, these are the faces and voices of people they know, people who lived alongside them in the same community, who traveled the same familiar roads, and with whom they shared the simple moments of everyday life.
Our employees, many of whom are also affected by the disaster and lost a great deal, are responding in ways that come from knowing the community and the people so well.  Through their actions, they are showing the rest of the 170,000 Yamato Group employees throughout Japan what it is we should be doing now.
Fishing and agriculture, two industries that nurtured and helped our parcel delivery business grow, suffered catastrophic damage. This presents a major challenge that affects the dietary habits of people throughout Japan. Therefore, while continuing our overall support activities of sorting relief supplies and transporting goods to strategic relief centers where they are urgently needed, we will also begin moving to help restore local infrastructure and support the recovery of fishing and agriculture in the affected areas. 
For those industries, the road to recovery will be long and hard, and will require tremendous financial resources.  And we want to do our best to help.
Yamato handles about 1.3 billion parcels annually.  By donating \10 for every parcel we deliver, about \13 billion can be collected in a year to help fund restoration efforts.  Our charges will not change.  But the funds we collect will be generated through our business and with the assistance of our customers throughout the country.
Each month, we will update our website with the amount of money that has been collected and utilized for restoration. We are determined to adhere to this program no matter how difficult it may become, to show our gratitude and repay the people who have supported us over the years.
It’s been a month since the earthquake. The eyes and interest of the world will gradually shift away from the events that occurred in Japan.  Yet, there will be many who remain crushed by the weight of reality and enveloped in sadness.
But we will never forget.  We will always try to imagine the pain only those personally affected can know and make this the starting point for our actions toward recovery.
We will begin.  We will carry on with our business as always, now knowing that with every package we carry we also carry the hope for a better day.
