Our Thoughts on Postal Service Privatization
An Opinion Advertisement placed in Major Newspapers Dated
August 26 and 27, 2004.
"Kuroneko-Yamato Does Not Change."
To Our Takkyubin Customers
We have decided to discontinue handling Takkyubin and Takkyubin-related products and services at Lawson stores, chain convenience stores on Thursday, November 18, 2004. Although this will reduce one type of outlets that has been close to you, we will make greater efforts to eliminate the inconvenience and to provide the same convenience as it always has been in the past.
Unfortunately, Contract with Kuroneko-Yamato was terminated.
On Tuesday, August 17, 2004, the Lawson Headquarters notified us that they would cancel the Takkyubin handling center contract, which eventually means that they have chosen "Yu-Pack" (postal parcel) for their door-to-door delivery service.
The Lawson Headquarters had previously indicated a willingness to handle both Takkyubin and Yu-Pack. We, Kuroneko-Yamato, however, find it impossible to accept such a proposal.
You may think Kuroneko-Yamato to be egoistic, however,
we, Kuroneko-Yamato, have a corporate culture that gives the highest priority to the customer convenience. We would like to fairly compete for customer satisfaction with competitors.
We take great pride in having been providing better products and services to you, trying to improve by learning from others through a great number of competitions. We want a clean competition. We want a fair competition. We dare not join the competition unless such a principle is followed. This is our stance on this issue. Some may want to make a complaint that Kuroneko-Yamato is ignoring customers. We, nonetheless, would like to stick to the principle, even if we might be coming under criticism.
Japan Post is trying to participate the competition with the profit from monopolistic enterprise.
The first thing we must tell you is that not all the operations of Japan Post have been made available to the private sector. In other words, Japan Post still has a monopoly on some area that the private sector cannot enter into. Since Japan Post dominates delivery of letters and postcards, there is no free price competition. On the other hand, you may be surprised to learn that Japan Post extends a generous discount to big clients of brochure parcel delivery service (equivalent to mail delivery in the private sector) that compete with the private sector.
Kuroneko-Yamato is all for the competition against Japan Post, as long as it is fair.
Private companies are working hard to raise greater profit, pay corporate tax, and return as much profits as possible to shareholders and employees. For the door-to-door delivery industry, in particular, we, private companies, have put in a great deal of efforts to develop new products and services, to create a nation-wide delivery network, resulted in extending the market scale to as it is today. Now, Japan Post is trying to enter into our very market with Lawson as a foothold.
Furthermore, it is a known fact that Japan Post receives various tax benefits.
Do you call this clean?
Do you call this fair?
Do you call it fair play for Japan Post to start competition in the market where private companies have pioneered?
Kuroneko-Yamato is a private company, only possible to exist with supports from you.
Kuroneko-Yamato will not change its corporate stance of being there for customers.
Not only Takkyubin, but also all the other products and services of Kuroneko-Yamato have been realized in pursuit of customers' convenience. We will continue to create more convenient products and services with unprecedented ideas. This is the corporate stance that Kuroneko-Yamato keeps for the future; we believe this is the corporate stance a private company should take to be selected by customers.
